Course Aims

The aim of this course is to give a delegate the basic knowledge and introduction into Safety, Health and Welfare Laws in the Workplace today. Each Unit is designed to educate delegates into the current legislation and good work practices in the work place today.

NOTE: This Course is also designed also to be used as an induction for staff into a workplace.

Learning Aims and Objectives by Unit. 

Unit 1: Health and safety at work (Part 1)

Unit Aims: This unit will provide you with lots of useful information on health and safety in the workplace, in particular information that is relevant to you as you start work.

Course Duration : 45 minutes approx.

At the end of Unit 1, participants should be able to:
• differentiate between employer and employee duties with regard to safety, health and welfare in the workplace
• understand the role of the Health and Safety Authority
• identify what to do in the event of a workplace accident and what a reportable workplace accident is
• describe a safety statement including its purpose
• outline the role of a safety officer and safety representative and the benefits of consultation in the workplace

Unit 2: Health and safety at work (Part 2)

Unit Aims: This unit will provide you with information about manual handling in the workplace. It provides an overview of some of the terms relating to manual handling and shows you what you can do to protect yourself against manual handling related injury.

Course Duration : 20 minutes approx.

At the end of Unit 2, participants should be able to:
• recognise the importance of positive safety behaviour in the workplace
• understand personal responsibility
• identify safety signs and their meaning
• describe the factors that can impact safety, health and welfare at work
• define stress and list some of the measures that can help to reduce work-related stress

Unit 3: Manual handling
Unit Aims: This unit will provide you with information about manual handling in the workplace. It provides an overview of some of the terms relating to manual handling and shows you what you can do to protect yourself against manual handling related injury.

Course Duration : 20 minutes approx.

At the end of Unit 3, participants should be able to:
• define manual handling
• outline the main causes of manual handling injuries
• understand the employer’s role in conducting manual handling risk assessments
• outline some of the control measures for preventing manual handling injuries

Unit 4: Ergonomics
Unit Aims: This unit will provide you with information about workplace ergonomics in relation to tools, machinery and equipment, workstations and computer workstations.

Course Duration : 20 minutes approx.

At the end of Unit 4, participants should be able to:
• define ergonomics
• list some ergonomic hazards and the effects of poor ergonomics
• identify some of the measures workplaces take to reduce the risk of injury
• outline ergonomic improvements that can be applied to a computer workstation

Unit 5: Housekeeping in the workplace
Unit Aims: This unit provides you with information about the importance of housekeeping in the workplace.  It looks at slips, trips and falls hazards, along with some suggestions around good housekeeping practices that you may be able to apply to your work.

Course Duration : 20 minutes approx.

At the end of Unit 5, participants should be able to:
• outline the benefits of good ‘housekeeping’ in the workplace
• recognise common slip, trip and fall hazards in the workplace
• describe the factors that can cause workplace slips, trips and falls, and how these are managed

Unit 6: Chemical safety
Unit Aims: This unit looks at chemical safety, chemical labels and hazard pictograms, how chemicals can enter the body and how they can affect you, and control measures which may be used to protect you when working with chemicals.

Course duration : 20 minutes approx.

At the end of Unit 6, participants should be able to:
• understand the purpose of a chemical label and a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
• recognise hazard pictograms and their meaning
• outline how chemicals can enter the body
• identify some of the control measures that workplaces implement for working with chemicals

Unit 7: Workplace transport safety
Unit Aims: This unit will provide you with information on transport safety in the workplace. It highlights the dangers of moving vehicles, the controls that your employer may have in place and how you can protect yourself from injury. Course Duration : 20 minutes approx.

At the end of Unit 7, participants should be able to:
• identify some of the hazards associated with workplace transport
• understand the main causes of workplace transport accidents
• demonstrate an awareness of the controls in place to protect drivers and pedestrians

Unit 8: Noise and machinery
Unit Aims: This unit provides information on machinery and how to stay safe when operating or working around machinery. It will also provide you with useful information on workplace noise.

Course Duration: 20 minutes approx.

At the end of Unit 8, participants should be able to:
• outline some of the main hazards associated with machinery
• understand why control measures are in place and how risk is managed
• describe the effects of noise exposure in the workplace
• understand the purpose of PPE

Note: You can stop the course at any time and come back to it at a later stage, taking up where you left off. Your progress will be stored in your personal account. Learning outcomes for each unit are outlined on the course homepage.

Certification and Accreditation:

A certificate is awarded to participants for completing all units.

Assessment Method:

An assessment must also be completed at the end of each Unit.  A minimum score of 80% is required to pass.

Course setup: This course requires a computer/device which is connected to the Internet and is running a web browser. For optimal user experience, this course runs best in Chrome. It contains audio so you will need to use headphones or speakers plugged into your computer/device to listen to it.
